Carrie Usui

Carrie Usui is the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Project Director and Lead Support for the PLAS Partnership at UCLA Center X. As Director of the NBPTS Project, Carrie organizes, facilitates and supports candidates across the Los Angeles area in becoming National Board Certified Teachers. Additionally, she directs the Professional Teaching Development Center (PTDC), a grant-funded program through NBPTS and the Stuart Foundation that provides scholarships and school site cohort support to teachers in Los Angeles.

Carrie is also the lead support for the partnership Center X has with Los Angeles schools in the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools (PLAS), part of the I-Design division of Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Carrie supports and provides professional development for Center X Professional Learning Partners working at instructional coaches in six of the PLAS schools.

Prior to working at Center X, Carrie worked for several years as an English teacher at a middle school in West Los Angeles. She then worked as an English Language Arts Expert and Advisor for Secondary Literacy in a local district office in LAUSD for four years. During that time she helped develop and implement the district-wide English Language Arts instructional guide, presented and facilitated professional development for middle school and high school teachers and administrators, engaged teachers in lesson study, and developed distribute leadership teams with the members of professional learning communities at local high schools. For the past six years, Carrie has integrated her knowledge, skills and training in Cognitive CoachingSM and Adaptive Schools to work with the dynamical systems of Los Angeles public schools. In June 2008, Carrie became a Training Associate for the Center for Adaptive Schools.

Carrie is also a UCLA Writing Project Fellow and National Writing Project Teacher Consultant, National Board Certified Teacher, and certified Candidate Support Provider for NBPTS. She earned her B.A. from the University of California, San Diego, in world literature, with minors in history and vocal performance, and her M.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, in Asian-American studies.
