In her book, Laughing Matters: Live Creatively with Laughter, Mariana Funes refers to Guy Claxton's comment that creative people allow themselves to "hang out in the fog." The creative process is not always deliberate, nor can it be hurried. So, too, it is with groups that are engaged in respectful, patient dialogue. Some times the work of collective exploration is muddy. Seeking understanding through dialogue is purposeful, yet flexible and even tentative.

Reflection and Application

When we are participants in a group, what might be some reminders we have for ourselves to be patient, present and to pay attention to ourselves and others? What kinds of statements and language might we use to invite and encourage others to be comfortable "hanging out in the fog?"
