Supporting Adult Development in Our Schools
The importance of supporting the learning of adults, as well as students in our schools, is well documented. One researcher on this topic, Ellie Drago-Severson, has identified four ways in which adult development can be supported. In her book, Leading Adult Development (2009), Drago-Severson outlines these as "pillar practices." The four pillar practices are: engaging in collegial inquiry, teaming, mentoring, and providing leadership roles. In addition to describing the pillar practices, Drago-Severson lists ways in which educators can integrate them into a variety of activities in schools (e.g., study groups, committees). Central to each of the pillar practices is what, in Adaptive Schools, we call dialogue, and in Cognitive CoachingSM we call reflecting conversations. The importance of pausing, paraphrasing and posing questions is emphasized throughout Drago-Severson's book.
This week, think about what's happening in your school that contributes to the development of adults.
